In 2025, a team of 4 children participated in the Exmoor Challenge, a 16-mile route that requires navigation skills, map-reading, and compass skills. This was lead by Mr Chorley who has a great passion for walking and map-reading, and has received CPD in orienteering, leading outdoor activities and updated risk assessment training. They also received advice from Mrs Doyle who is a passionate scout leader with experience of the Exmoor Challenge.
The children were phenomenal, taking on this great challenge as a team and experiencing great success as a result!
"Seven months ago these children signed up to the Exmoor Challenge, a 16 mile self-navigated and unsupported trek across Exmoor. Since then they have done practice walks with school and family, learned everything there is to know about maps from Mrs Doyle and always been committed. Yesterday, some of them had to dig into their deepest reserves; it’s a real challenge for 11 year old children. But they did it and finished brilliantly. Thank you so much to the parents who all supported this endeavour superbly- it’s another SVSJ highlight for me (Mr C) and another reason I am grateful to be part of the SVSJ community." Mr Chorley
