Forest school

At SVSJ, as part of our LOTC offer we run a setting wide Forest School program, providing all students with regular opportunities to engage with and learn from the natural environment. We believe that these session are a critical part in our approach to education which ensures that students thrive both academically and personally in a setting that is adventurous, unique, connected, and ethical.

Our Forest school team is made up of  two certified Forest School Teachers, who receive regular training to stay current with best practices and safety protocols. These leaders have also delivered staff CPD to all teaching staff in KS1 and 2 to further support them in bringing aspects of forest school further into curriculum learning. We also have a trained forest school leader at the Mill nursery which allows us to implement planned 'outdoor learning' from 6 months to 11 years old, ensuring that outdoor learning is culturally ingrained from a young age.

We offer Forest School sessions to all students within our dedicated woodland area, known as Lily's Wood. These sessions encompass a spectrum of activities, from orienteering with compasses to hands-on tasks like whittling, fostering an intimate connection with the natural environment.

To further promote inclusivity, all children are encouraged to participate in Forest School sessions, which allow them to safely take risks and build confidence. Our SEND policy ensures that every child, can benefit from outdoor learning experiences.
