We believe school visits to be a wonderful way from children to both extend their curriculum learning opportunities and develop a variety of skills outside of the classroom. Below are some of the school visits children have participated in through out the school.
Sacred Spaces and Faith
All children participate in visits to St John church for Harvest, Christmas and Easter celebrations each year. Most children participate in the walk down to the church discussing the idea of 'pilgrimage.'
Elder visited a Hindu temple in Bristol to deepen their understanding of RE.
Dogwood have made trips to Bristol Synagogue also.
These immersive experience helped them connect with the cultural and spiritual practices they learned about in class.
Within our local learning area
Arum explore our local area through taking a walk around the village, visiting the co-op and garden centre.
Previously we had whole school harvest celebrations at Manor farm in our local area.
All children regularly walk to St John's church through our local area.
Children in KS2 often walk to Downside for swimming lessons exploring their local country side.
Museums and Heritage
Elder have explored the interactive science exhibits at We the Curious in Bristol, tying their classroom science lessons to hands-on learning experiences.
Dogwood have participate in trips to Avebury stone circle when learning about the Stone age
Campion have participated in visits to the Midsomer Norton heritage railway station when learning about local history.
Arum each year take a walk around the village exploring their local area.
Farming and Countryside
Foxglove and Gentian visited Folly Farm
Bryony visited Bath city farm and Arum also participated on a farm trip also.
Campion visited the Owl sanctuary in Bath.
These trips linked to their science curriculum and allowed them to see the principles of sustainable farming and wildlife conservation in action.
Art, Culture, and Creativity
Bryony performed country dancing at both the school summer fayre and Stratton on the Fosse fair.
Campion and Gentian students have attended children’s literature festivals, where they had the opportunity to meet well-known authors.
Foxglove students showcased their musical progress by performing violin and cello pieces for parents, demonstrating their development in technique and musicality.
Foxglove and Gentian performed at Young Voices as part of the ‘world’s largest children's choir’ at the NEC in Birmingham.
Additionally, our school choir performed at the Wells Cathedral Christmas Celebration Concert 2024 and our dancers and musicians performed at Downside theatre in their own show.
Children from Bryony, Campion, Elder, Foxglove and Gentian performed at the dance umbrella also.
STEM
Gentian students participated in the Wells Cathedral Maths Festival, engaging with various mathematical challenges and activities that enhanced their problem-solving skills and mathematical understanding.
Dogwood visited the Earth science centre, visiting the quarry and learning all about fossils and rocks.
Residential trips and overnight stays
Gentian children participate in a school residential to Osmington bay.
Elder participate in a school residential to Greatwood
Dogwood participate in a class sleepover at school.
Sports
At SVSJ, sports play a significant role in our students’ development. In the previous year, Team SVSJ has won the Midsomer Norton Swimming Gala, with everyone bringing home at least two medals each.
We’re proud to keep the overall schools champions trophy in Chilcompton for another year.
